I am from the hill district of Kabhre Palanchok, a half-day road trip from the capital city, Kathmandu, in central Nepal, where I have my ancestral home and my parents still take care of the home and farm we own. Once I completed my secondary education there at a neighboring village school, like many other youths, I came to Kathmandu for further education.
As my parents couldn’t afford all the education expenses, I had to look for options for supporting my education. Amidst the challenging situations on my own, Nepal was going through a series of political incidents that included Maoist-waged armed struggle or people’s war and the country turning from king’s rule to multi-party democracy and eventually to a republic state.
I was compelled to abandon my ongoing education and went to Malaysia to find a job there as a foreign laborer. Even these days, hundreds of youths go abroad seeking a better future in Nepal, but only some get the job and luck they seek.
In Malaysia, I saw hundreds of fellow citizens experiencing challenging situations of low pay, extremely physically-demanding jobs, and various other issues related to hard-working labor. There, I was involved in rescuing fellow workers who needed to return home but faced challenges of rules and situations they were abiding by, and some of them were in poor health conditions.
After spending six years there and experiencing more challenging situations, I returned to my homeland in 2008. As a member of the Tamang family, one of the indigenous hill groups of Nepal, born to work in the mountains, including trekking and climbing, with the help of my neighbors and friends, I decided to explore my chance in mountain tourism.
I started my career as a trekking porter, kitchen assistant, porter, and assistant guide for various trekking agencies in Kathmandu. I gathered adequate experience and confidence to start my agency. As a result, in 2013, I registered my own agency named Himalayan Exploration Treks.
Since then, I have been continuously working in the mountain tourism of Nepal. It has become a source of living for my small family of four and some support to my parents. At the same time, I get chances to see my country’s remote places and realize how beautiful it is.
I work with a small team of guides for trekking, climbing, and cultural tours. My group formed with members who love their country, not only for loving their motherland. But they try to make it different by working here in their homes, villages, and mountains.
